Do we need an unsubscribe link in transactional emails?

Hi community. Quick question that’s causing some confusion in our team.

When sending emails via Mumara, do we need to include an unsubscribe link in transactional emails? For example:
  • Password reset
  • Order confirmation
  • Invoice notification
Some people are saying every email must have unsubscribe, others say transactional emails are different.

Would love clarification from someone experienced.

That's quite a great question and this confusion is very common.
However, the answer to your query is, No, purely transactional emails do NOT require an unsubscribe link.

But there’s an important condition:
The email must be strictly transactional.

In Mumara, transactional emails are:
  • Triggered by a user action
  • Necessary for account/service functionality
  • Not marketing-driven
  • Expected by the recipient
For example:
Example 1 -> Proper Transactional Email (No Unsubscribe Needed)
Subject: Your password reset request
Hi Sarah,

We received a request to reset your password.

Click the link below to create a new password:

If you didn’t request this, please ignore this email.

✔Triggered by user
✔No marketing
✔No promotional CTA
➡ This does NOT need an unsubscribe link.

That’s where people get into trouble.

The moment you add marketing intent, it’s no longer purely transactional.

Example 2 ->Mixed Email (Now Needs Unsubscribe)
Subject: Your invoice is ready
Hi Sarah,

Your invoice for March is available in your dashboard.

That second paragraph turns it into promotional content.

-In this case, it should be treated as a marketing email in Mumara.
-It should include an unsubscribe link.

Exactly, mailbox providers and regulations care about intent and content, not just the fact that it was triggered.

In Mumara:
  • Transactional emails are typically sent via system/API flows
  • Promotional emails are sent via campaigns
  • Promotional emails must respect unsubscribe preferences

Jumping in with real experience here.

We used to include a small banner in order confirmations saying “Upgrade now.” Inbox placement started dropping slowly.

Once we separated system emails from marketing campaigns inside Mumara, deliverability improved.

Lesson learned:
Keep transactional emails clean and boring

Yes, In proper setups:
  • Unsubscribing stops promotional emails
  • It does NOT stop critical transactional emails
That’s actually why transactional emails shouldn’t include unsubscribe links because they are service-related and required.

Example 3 -> Clean Transactional Confirmation
Subject: Order Confirmed
Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your purchase.

Order #48291 has been successfully placed.

You can track your order in your account dashboard.

If you have any questions, contact support.

No marketing.
No upsell.
No unsubscribe required.

I guess this thread should be bookmarked.

The rule is simple:

✔ Purely informational = No unsubscribe needed
✔ Marketing intent present = Add unsubscribe

Mumara gives you flexibility but it’s our responsibility to classify emails correctly.
